OA at Camp!

By John Taylor, Lodge Chief
Ceremony Team So this summer, you decided to go to Camp Durant for Summer Camp. First off, excellent choice! You are lucky enough to attend a camp that employed the Lodge Chief and all the Vice Chiefs, the first time in quite a while that this momentous occasion has occurred. So as a Brother, what can you do with Occoneechee Lodge? There are several Order of the Arrow events that occur each week at Camp Durant. On Monday afternoon, if you are an Ordeal member and are eligible for Brotherhood, then you can meet with me for the Brotherhood trail. This meeting is just for information so Brotherhood Candidates can study for the trail, which takes place Wednesday afternoon at the Outdoor Skills shelter. Monday evening we have the Order of the Arrow Ice Cream Social, where, as an OA member, you are welcome to come hang out with the Chiefs, eat some ice cream, meet people, and enjoy some cool air conditioning in the heat of Camp Durant. Wednesday night the Order of the Arrow runs the Campfire, conducting our weekly call out ceremony. Regarded as one of the coolest ceremonies on the East Coast, it is worth every minute of your time. Finally, Wednesday night following the campfire we conduct the Brotherhood Ceremony, for those candidates who went through the trail in the afternoon. There is so much OA-wise going on at camp, that you would be missing out on a lot by skipping out! See you at Camp Durant!!

Go To Philmont This Summer!

By Stephen Senter
Spaces Are Still Available

Order of the Arrow Trail Crew at Philmont Scout Ranch is still accepting applications for Summer 2011. OATC is a two week program that allows Arrowmen to come together from across the country and strengthen the ties of the Order together. The first week is spent building trail for the Ranch in scenic, high-priority areas. These trails are used and hiked on by future generations of participants who will greatly benefit from them. The second week is spent hiking around the Ranch on a seven-day trek. What is unique about this trek is that you, the participant, will plan it and decide where you want to go. No other trek on the Ranch is allowed this privilege. Furthermore, it is the cheapest way to go on a trek at Philmont (only $200)!

I was a participant in OATC in 2006, an OATC Foreman in 2007, and will be a Foreman once again this summer. I can honestly say that the program has changed my life in ways that I cannot even begin to put into words. The lasting friendships I have created are invaluable, the lessons I have learned are with me to this day, and the enormity of the work completed and feats accomplished are still beyond my grasp. I hope that each and every one of you will not pass up the opportunity that so many have deemed invaluable.

If it’s too late for you to plan for this summer, please consider it for 2012!

BLOOD DONOR DRIVE for Vigil member

Posted By Dave Sweeney
Vigil member VERN UNRUH will soon be on the transplant list for a new liver. He will need several pint of blood during his operation. We are asking all our Brothers to go to the nearest American Red Cross donation facility and donate a pint of blood in his name.

It doesn’t matter what blood type you have, just make sure that you let them know that you are “donating for VERN UNRUH” so he will get credit for your pint when he has his operation.

There will be an American Red Cross Blood Mobile at Conclave, so this would be a great time for you to show your support for your fellow OA member.

We want to thank everyone in advance for your generosity.

Relive the memories of NOAC 2009!

By John Taylor, Lodge Chief
NOAC 2009
Introducing the 2009 Occoneechee Lodge 104 NOAC Contingent!

From July 30th to August 6th, 2009, 49 of our brothers experienced an event that will not soon be forgotten. At around 4am those of us from the Fayetteville and surrounding areas boarded a Holiday charter bus in Sanford to head toward Durham to pick up the rest of our contingent. Once everyone was loaded we headed toward Indiana for NOAC! Thursday was used as a get to know everyone day for the contingent, where we learned our fellow brothers most embarrassing moments! Thursday night we arrived in Indiana; Friday marked the start of some touring that took place throughout Indianapolis and parts of the state. The contingent visited the NCAA Hall of Champions, saw the outside of the Colt’s new Lucas Oil Stadium, ate at White Castle (bad decision for everyone that went except Kevin Pusak) and visited the Indianapolis Motor Speedway! At the speedway we all kissed the bricks and walked Jimmie Johnson’s winning burnout marks, just like we had won the race! After one last night on the road we made our way to Indiana University at Bloomington (one of the biggest campuses many of us had ever seen!)

Occoneechee Lodge wins big at 2009 Conclave!

By Nelson Blair, Lodge Chief
CAMP TUSCARORA - A good time was had by all April 17-19 at the 2009 SR-7B Conclave. As a lodge we received numerous first and second place finishes in individual dance and Pre-ordeal ceremony competitions. A special congratulations to our Brotherhood team, Drum/singing team, cooking competition team, and our iron man team for receiving first place in their respective competitions. Also, congratulations to Nick Oschner and Kevin Biegert for winning their section officer elections.
The positive spirit we showed all weekend was unmatched, especially during the quest events (the cheers for the pancake team were hilarious).
The big news is that Occoneechee Lodge won the most prestigious award this weekend... HONOR LODGE for section 7B. It has been over ten years since we last won this award and it is a tribute to everything that the entire Lodge has achieved throughout the year. This award signifies that our fellow lodges in SR-7B consider us to be the best lodge in the section for 2009 and is a testament to the dedication of our members.
